Call for manuscripts for a special issue of American Journal of Education

Topic:  “Leadership in American Indian and Alaska Native Education:

Opportunities and Challenges”
Guest Editors:  Susan C. Faircloth (The Pennsylvania State University) and John W. Tippeconnic, III (Arizona State University)

We invite the submission of manuscripts that provide an overview of the current issues and trends impacting school leadership (K-12) as it relates to the education of American Indian and Alaska Native students. Manuscripts should address one of three themes:  (1) a critical and in-depth discussion and analysis of the impact of the self-determination movement of the 1960s on the field of Indian education over the past 40 years, (2) conceptual and theoretical manuscripts that address current educational policies and practices, as well as pose recommendations for future research in the field of Indian education, and (3) empirical research involving American Indian and Alaska Native students in public schools, as well as those attending schools operated or funded by the Bureau of Indian Education and tribes.

Authors are encouraged to submit manuscripts that reflect a variety of methodological and theoretical perspectives including qualitative, quantitative and mixed methodological approaches to the study of leadership and Indian education. We are particularly interested in manuscripts that incorporate both western and Indigenous ways of knowing as relate to the study and practice of educational leadership. We also seek manuscripts that help to address the ongoing shortage of empirical research in the field of Indian education and leadership.

Prospective authors are asked to submit a 1,000-word overview for consideration by the guest editors and the editorial review board. Manuscripts should be received no later than April 15, 2011 and can be submitted electronically to: http://www.editorialmanager.com/aje/default.asp

Manuscripts selected for publication in AJE should not exceed 10,000 words, including tables, footnote, endnotes, graphs, etc. Authors are asked to follow the journal’s style requirements available on-line at: http://www.journals.uchicago.edu/page/aje/instruct.html
